I had the pleasure of taking pictures for these SUPER SWEET first time parents of TWINS. It's hard enough taking care of ONE newborn for the first time, much less TWO. They absolutely were rocking it and I could sense their home was full of peace and laughter in the short time I was there.
I don't have twins or know many that do, so photographing twins was definitely a new experience for me. I learned a lot. At the young age of 3 weeks... you can already tell the personality differences between the two siblings. One was more alert and observant. The other was a better sleeper. One liked to be swaddled super tight, the other was always trying to get one arm out. One was more sensitive to sound. The other needed more touch and cuddles.
I went home reflecting on this. When I was a first time mom, I would hear from veteran parents: “All kids are different. There is no one formula to raise them”! I remember hearing that and thinking “ok yeah yeah, but can you just tell me what works?" 😅 I was drowning in juggling naps, schedules, breastfeeding, etc and I just wanted a guide to follow. But it’s true, what worked for the first one won't necessarily work for the second one. When I had more children, I became a more balanced parent as I threw out a lot of “musts” and “shoulds”. I embraced the personality differences between my children and learned the importance of adjusting my parenting according to their needs.
All that to say, I drove home that day from my shoot wondering if parents of twins are more balanced as first time parents because they see their kids' differences more acutely right away. Appreciating the uniqueness of their babies side by side, and realizing how differently they were created and how they need to be loved differently. What a gift!
